Friendster looking to capitalize on its patents?

Since Friendster has failed in comparison to rivals MySpace and Facebook, it is looking for a strategy to make money out of their patents. Friendster gets another social networking patent; third in last 9 months, which makes you wonder.... They don't charge anyone now yet, but my feeling is theat they will. Time will show...

The company says the patent covers adding friends, personalizing a profile through arranging, ordering and classifying connections made in an online community, and managing these connections at will.

Viacom said that almost 160,000 unauthorized clips of its programming -- the company's holdings include Paramount Pictures, MTV, Comedy Central and Nickelodeon -- have been viewed more than 1.5 billion times on YouTube.

"Their business model, which is based on building traffic and selling advertising off of unlicensed content, is clearly illegal and is in obvious conflict with copyright laws," Viacom said in a statement.

Pro-Kremlin parties dominate in a fake Russian Democracy

Pro-Kremlin parties, including United Russia (a party that supports President Vladimir Putin), have won Russian regional elections, preliminary results showed yesterday, after a campaign that left Russia's weak opposition more marginalised than ever.

Pundits had predicted that government parties, buoyed by a strong economy, Kremlin-controlled media, generous funding and Mr Putin's popularity, would sweep the vote.

Critics of the Kremlin say the opposition, in retreat since Mr Putin's first presidential win in 2000, never had a real chance.

Spammers, hackers target sites such as MySpace and Facebook.

Because of MySpace, Facebook, YOuTube incredible growth in recent years, many spammers, hackers and other crooks are trying to take advantage of it. "What happens in the virtual world . . . is very (similar) to what happens in the physical world," ... Where a lot of people congregate, at some point you're going to have a bad element that shows up and tries to do bad things."

Scammers often set up fake profiles on MySpace, Friendster, Facebook and similar sites and then go about inviting people to become their Internet "friends."

In doing so, they can glean personal information about their potential targets — like their ZIP codes, age or gender — that can be used to fashion legitimate-sounding spam or phishing attacks.

So, watch out!

P.S. Tips for safe networking

• Limit the information you give about yourself.
• Don't automatically assume something sent from a 'friend' is legitimate.
• Be careful about adding strangers to your friends list.
• Don't use links in embedded e-mails to go to any unfamiliar site.
• Set limits on what people can see, you profile, etc

ClickandBuy To Offer Person-to-Person Payments, Cash Vouchers and Phone Billing for Digital Content

ClickandBuy, an ASP ePayment service for digital music and other types of content, plans to offer secure person-to-person payments and a cash voucher program for the European market. Lastly, ClickandBuy plans to unveil its phone billing service in the U.S. market.

"Delivery of secure digital content for online music stores is dependent on expansion into new markets and different ways to pay. For example, in Europe, most people do not use a credit card and therefore merchants are leaving money on the table, so to speak. The reason why companies like Apple iTunes selected us in Europe is that we can deliver over 40 payment types, which enables our merchants to instantly increase their income," said Norbert Stangl, CEO of ClickandBuy.
