Split over amnesty for illegal immigrants

Should 12 million illegal immigrants stay in the US? President George W. Bush and White House say no. The administration “firmly opposes amnesty, because rewarding those who break the law would compromise the rule of law, encourage more illegal entrants and increase pressure on the border”.
On the other hand, supporters of allowing legalisation for current illegal immigrants point out that the numbers have grown consistently since 1980 and are driven by US labour demands rather than the prospect of legal status in the US.
